Since the Japanese colonial period, the relationship between Korea and Japan has been complicated in many different aspects. But recently, the relationship between the two nations have worsened significantly, leading to the current state: Korea's boycott of Japan. Though this movement is gaining a lot of support among the Korean citizens, the movement has critical flaws that make it unjustifiable.
First, considering that Korea did break the compromise president Park Jung Hee made, this movement is way too radical. It breaks the communication that is crucial for the two nations to understand each other's stance. International politics shouldn't be about whether one nation's motive is justified; it should be about making others to agree with the motives. In the status quo, Japan is in a situation where misunderstanding can happen, and forcing our needs in an emotional way is not helping.
Also, the movement has gone way too far; it is violating the freedom of our own citizens. Celebrities get criticized for going on a vacation to Japan. People get treated as spies for using Japanese products. This movement's purpose has been altered. It is the Japanese government that we need compensation from, not the corporations and the people of Japan. Korean citizens, the citizens of a free and democratic citizens getting criticized for using innocent Japanese corporation's products and services is the result of emotional misjudgment originating from the boycott.
Even though the causes are somewhat understandable, because the purpose cannot justify its means, and the movement has gone too far, it does more harm than good.
